چکیده

ABSlRACT Over the years a variety of technologies have been used to remove organic contamination from water. Unfortunately, most of these techniques are either too expensive or too complicated to operate and, in some cases, cause secondary pollution effects. Various membrane processes have been developed and tried but, unfortunately, little success has been realized. Membrane processes are gaining increased acceptance in a variety of separations because they are relatively simple, require less energy to operate, can easily be scaled up, and because they can achieve a high degree of selectivity of separation. However, they have had several drawbacks when applied to hydrocarbon-water separations, such as degradation from petroleum products, fouling, inadequate rejection of petroleum hydrocarbons, and high failure rates, resulting in high replacement costs. Described herein, is a new membrane technology that has been shown to be extremely effective in separating hydrocarbons from water streams. This membrane separation process uses a proprietary membrane called EXTRANTM, which is composed of completely natural cellulose made by a special SDI process. Membranes are in the form of hollow fibers that are potted into suitable pressure vessels and incorporated into a system. The EXTRAN membrane is resistant to a vast array of hydrocarbons and organic solvents. Being a true diffusion membrane, it has no pores to clog. These properties, in combination with high tangential velocities through the bore of the membrane, allows continuous operation with little or no chemical cleaning. Presented are test data obtained by the company in its laboratories as well as results obtained by others. The results obtained to date indicate that the new membrane system shows good potential for the treatment of a variety of hydrocarbon contamhated wastewaters. Applications being exploited include treatment of tank water bottoms, offshore produced water, and a variety of other liquid waste streams.

Acetic acid Separation as a Function of Temperature Using Commercial Pervaporation Membrane

Acetic acid was separated from a dilute mixture using a commercial polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membrane.  Intrinsic separation characteristics of the membrane were studied as a function of temperature.  The degree of membrane swelling decreased marginally with increase in feed temperature. At 25oC the maximum degree of swelling was found out to be 46.3%, which reduced to 39.5%...

Membrane Condenser for Particulate Abatement from Waste-Gaseous Streams

Membrane Condenser (MC) is a novel membrane contactor operation recently investigated for the valorization of industrial waste gaseous streams. In particular, until now, it was applied for water recovery from flue gas, cooling tower plumes, etc. More recently, its effectiveness and flexibility in contaminants (such as, NH3 , HF, SO2 ) removal and control from waste gaseous streams was also prov...

Pebax-Modified Cellulose Acetate Membrane for CO2/N2 Separation

Carbon dioxide (CO2) release from the exhaust gas streams of power plants that burn fossil fuels contributes the most emission of this gas, which includes more than half of the greenhouse effects. Thus, the separation of CO2 from exhaust gases is one of the main environmental concerns. Membrane technology, due to many advantages, has attracted many research attentions among the various gas sepa...

Functionalized Polymeric Membranes for CO2 Capture

Reducing CO2 emission and lowering the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has quickly become one of the most urgent environmental issues. While a variety of technologies and methods have been developed, the separation of CO2 from gas streams is still a critical issue. Apart from establishing new techniques, the exploration of membrane materials with high separation performance ...
